Ignite Dance WA

We're delighted to bring you an exclusive interview with our wonderful Co-Director, Jenny Trafford, who has recently been appointed as a Royal Academy of Dance examiner. This interview offers a unique opportunity to gain insights into the world of ballet and contemporary dance, straight from the expertise of our very own Co-Director.

In this interview, we explore topics such as the significance of the Royal Academy of Dance examinations, the benefits they offer to students, and how they align with our school's vision for excellence in dance education. Miss Jenny shares her personal experiences and insights, shedding light on the incredible opportunities these examinations provide for young dancers to grow, develop, and showcase their talent.

What inspired you to become a ballet examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD)?

People and a passion for ballet!

Growing up I was fortunate enough to be taught by several wonderful examiners and I felt that they had so much to offer with their knowledge and understanding of the art of classical ballet. Each of these examiners had their own style and passions but they collectively had such a commitment to the RAD and a willingness to support every dancer on their journey no matter where their journey began or potentially would end!

I look forward to being able to do the same for the next generation of dancers and teachers. Passing on knowledge and a passion for an art form you care so deeply about is priceless!

Can you tell us a little bit about your background in ballet and dance education?

I seem to be somewhat of a serial studier! Over the past 23 years, I have completed a Degree in Education, Certificates in various dance styles including ballet, modern, Spanish and tap. I truly believe it is all of these experience combined which has offered me wonderful opportunities as a dancer, teacher and now examiner.

I have always embraced diversity in studios, dancers and colleagues… from a small community hall class with beginners to an elite program with students about to embark on their professional careers. The common factor was passionate dancers…. If you are keen to learn (and listen), I cannot wait to work with you!

What are some of the most important qualities that you look for in a successful ballet student?

Enthusiasm for learning; no matter your learning style! Openness; an ability to welcome ideas, thoughts and corrections from your teacher, trusting that they have your best interests at heart! An ability to get back up again; no matter what life throws at you take any knockback as a learning curve and know that your time will come, often we just don’t know what form it will take!

How do you think ballet exams can benefit students beyond simply earning a certification?

You never know what you don’t know or who may be an influence on your future journey! Dance is this magical place where you will have the opportunity to meet many mentors, teachers and fellow dancers. By taking part in examinations you are able to work with fantastic teachers, be offered opportunities to assist in a class or shine on stage, and most importantly build tenacity when working towards a long-term goal – not everything is instant! Without working towards the goal of an exam I do find dancers can potentially lose their way. Pushing yourself to go beyond your own expectations is so very important!

What are your top three tips you would give for the exam day?

Enjoy the experience, the examiner wants to see what you CAN do! Breathe, this will help your performance and allay any anxieties before going into the studio. And don’t forget to take a picture for the memory box! I still have a picture of me getting my hair done by my teacher when I was 9 just before my RAD exam, a special moment in time.
